Okinawa — Japan’s southernmost islands,
once an independent nation known as the Ryukyu Kingdom.
On this singular night, 80 years after the end of World War II, the traditional court dances
of this lost kingdom will grace the global stage—performed only once, in New York.
The Akamine Sisters, highly acclaimed both in Japan and abroad as heirs to the Ryukyuan dance tradition, will make their long-awaited Carnegie Hall debut.
Elder sister Natsuko Akamine and younger sister Maki Akamine began their training at an early age and have since dedicated their lives to the art of Ryukyuan dance.
While rooted in classical tradition, their performances also explore creative new expressions, carrying the spirit of Okinawa forward to future generations.
Their newest performance, “SHIMAI”, draws upon the rich meaning of the Japanese word kokorozashi (志)—a pursuit of ideals and hopes for the future, and a heart full of compassion and a wish for peace.
Through this work, the Akamine Sisters share the healing and spiritual depth of Okinawa with audiences around the world.
A once-in-a-lifetime performance.
A dance of elegance, power, and purpose—one that will leave a lasting impression in the heart of New York.
